Crockpot Chicken & Gravy: The Ultimate Comfort Meal

by Chelsea Catalan

I’ll never forget the first time I made this Crockpot Chicken & Gravy. It was one of those chaotic days—work was crazy, the kids were running wild, and I barely had time to think about dinner.

But I threw a few simple ingredients into the slow cooker, crossed my fingers, and hoped for the best. Hours later, my house smelled like pure comfort, and when we sat down to eat, it was like a warm hug in a bowl.

Since then, this has been my go-to meal when I need something effortless yet satisfying.

This recipe is a lifesaver—juicy, slow-cooked chicken smothered in a rich, savory gravy. It’s the kind of meal that makes you close your eyes and sigh after the first bite.

Plus, it’s easy to make with fresh, wholesome ingredients that you can find in any grocery store across the U.S.

Tips for the Best Flavor

  • Use chicken thighs: They have more flavor and stay extra juicy.
  • Homemade broth: If you have homemade chicken broth, use it—it makes the gravy even richer.
  • Sauté the butter & seasonings first: If you have an extra 5 minutes, melting the butter and stirring the seasonings into it before adding everything to the slow cooker deepens the flavor.

Variations & Substitutions

  • Dairy-Free? Skip the sour cream and use full-fat coconut milk instead.
  • Low-Carb? Serve over cauliflower mash instead of potatoes.
  • No Soup Mix? Substitute with 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon dried thyme.

Serving Suggestions

This dish is pure comfort food, and it pairs beautifully with:

  • Roasted Green Beans – The crunch balances out the creamy gravy.
  • Cornbread or Biscuits – Perfect for soaking up every drop of gravy.
  • Steamed Broccoli – Because we need something green on the plate!

Description

A rich, creamy slow-cooked chicken dish smothered in a savory gravy, perfect for serving over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts (or thighs for extra juiciness)
  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth
  • 1 packet (1 oz) onion soup mix
  • 1 packet (0.87 oz) chicken gravy mix
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika (optional, but adds depth)
  • ½ cup sour cream (for extra creamy gravy)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch + 2 tablespoons water (for thickening, if needed)

Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Chicken

Place the chicken in the bottom of your crockpot. Sprinkle the onion soup mix, chicken gravy mix, garlic powder, black pepper, and smoked paprika over the top. Add the sliced butter.

Step 2: Add Liquid & Cook

Pour in the chicken broth. Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours or high for 3-4 hours, until the chicken is tender and easily shreds.

Step 3: Make the Gravy Creamy

Once the chicken is cooked, shred it directly in the slow cooker using two forks. Stir in the sour cream until fully combined. If the gravy is too thin, mix cornstarch with water, stir it in, and let it cook for another 15 minutes on high to thicken.

Step 4: Serve & Enjoy

Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered egg noodles. Garnish with fresh parsley for a pop of color.

Notes

Best with bone-in chicken for extra flavor. Can be made dairy-free with coconut milk.
